This season was by far the worst GSL season for zerg players.

Especially the PvZ matchup with a protoss winrate of something like 80% for the Code S matches.

It's currently 68% across the GSL for this season.

As for some other notes, about Zerg not being like 5 seasons removed from doing anything.  In the last 8 Code S seasons, 13 Zergs have made it to the Round of 8.  Four of these were NesTea in consecutive seasons, and three of them all came in one season (when NesTea played LosirA in the finals, the third being CoCa).  That means out of the 13 appearances, 5 are accounted for right there (6-1 for reason stated below).

This is not a complaint, just me showing that Zergs have never really had their "glory days".  All them championships?  FruitDealer wins Season 1 as the only Zerg in the Round of 8.  NesTea beats MKP back when MKP never won a match that mattered (will ignore this appearance, as it was an Open Season), Inca (for heaven's sake), LosirA in a ZvZ when he was winning like 90% of that matchup, and...I believe that was it?  "It".  Recently we had DRG, once again the only Zerg in the round of 8, take first.  Someone did the math -- and showed us his work -- on another forum, and it basically averages 1 Zerg a season for Code S.

It seems Zerg can't ever really get a consistent group of players together, for whatever reason, yet any time a Zerg manages to reach the Round of 8, he eventually wins that season.  Obviously, I'm exaggerating, but you get the point.  It probably has to do with DRG's assessments that while "Zerg is the strongest race", he still continues to rage about poor race design on some of his worse days.  The race itself is possibly too volatile, resulting in the top pros consistently falling out in earlier rounds.  This falls in line with David Kim's assessment about the underrepresentation of Zergs in Code S and the fact that Blizzard is looking into Zerg scouting, etc.

I find this "slump" different from the Protoss slump that resulted from just having all-around poor players.  I think there's a reason that there has been massive turnover with that race, while the new wave of Zergs are still all generally Code A material and we see the same Zergs over and over in Code S.  While Protoss has gone through their strategy shifts rather slowly and paid for it, Zerg has basically explored every inch of the tech tree over these years.  The problem is fundamentally different.

I'm interested to see how everything pans out.

Edit: As for Stephano, I think he's going to be in for a rude awakening if he decides to come to Korea.  The guy just isn't used to this level of play and gets manhandled by any Code S level Korean.  He does take games against Code A level Koreans, so it's not necessarily hopeless for him...but I'll be cautiously optimistic.

Holy crap.. I just watched Stephano vs. Nestea game 2 in the IPL on Husky's channel, and the multi-tasking ability of this guy is out of this world. I am officially impressed.

I wouldn't expect Stephano to do any better than our current Zerg players in code S.
He's done ok in foreign tournaments, nothing to write home about though. DRG is probably the only zerg capable of winning a GSL nowadays.

Your right of course, he isnt at the level of the best Korean pros atm. BUT you can clearly see he have huge potential. And going to Korea not just to play in the GSL, but to maybe get invited to a team. Train with them and play Korean ladder.

That experience could take him to another level. Like it seem to have done with Naniwa. And did with Jinro back in the past.

At least i feel, there is no aggresive Zerg player anymore. Nestea is slacking, July have calmed down his play. Stephano could shake things up abit and hopefully give those toss players a run for the money!
