2012.03.13 Anyone else feel bad for Yugioh from last night's up and downs?
First up he has to play Squirtle on Entombed Valley which is a really tough map for ZvP and he puts up an excellent fight, could have easily gone his way if not for a clutch Vortex from his opponent. Next he takes down BboongBboong in a straight up ZvZ, just out-plays a good opponent. Then shows some creative play to beat Keen on Antiga Shipyard which is a pretty challenging ZvT map too and he's up 2-1... but then...
Has to play a ZvP on Entombed Valley again this time vs Avenge, gets pretty bad spawn positions, goes for an aggressive opening that doesn't really pay off, has some keyboard and mouse problems, gets cannon rushed at his natural and loses it, tries to protest about the hardware problems, request for regame denied, barely holds some Stargate pressure but dies to the followup Stargate plus Gateway timing. Now he has to win his final game for the Code S spot.
Final game, Heart - already eliminated - goes for a wonky proxy two-rax which Yugioh is expecting, but still doesn't manage to properly scout it due to the weird barracks position, loses his natural very early and simply can't recover. Loses the game and now can't advance ahead of Avenge or BbongBboong (who wins their showdown to advance with a 3-2 record).
Yugioh looked devasted after his losses to Avenge and Heart, poor kid, showed some really great play and deserved some luck, he could easily have gone 4-1. Squirtle clearly the best in the group, but I liked Yugioh for second place. Good luck in Code A Yugioh. |

- 2012.06.19 So, Yugiho, I heard after all that you managed to get through Code A directly into code S? Sorry, one does not simply stay in code S. You're up against Parting Marineking and Symbol. Enjoy :D |

- 2012.03.23 He's (Slayers YuGiOh) one of those players that in my opinion is right around the top Code A/Low Code S level, so I wasn't really surprised by his collapse after the game with Squirtle. When he does get into Code S like last season he just gets crushed in the Group of 32 round. |

- 2012.03.20 man, this yugioh guy has been around forever, yet no one seem to be able to figure out his sloppy style clearly to kick him out of code A yet... |

- 2012.03.13 Thanks for the reply, I'm glad someone read my post because I spent ages on it ;) I haven't had a look at the VODs for evidence of hardware faults so I'll take your word for it that it was a significant problem. Even that aside, he played well and had some really bad luck I thought - hard done by. |

- 2012.03.13 If you watch the YugiOh-Avenge game you can see there's clearly a problem with his hardware. YugiOh just stops at about 8:50 game time. His money starts piling up, his rallied lings auto-attack in and die, and you can see that nothing new gets started on the production tab. He finally gets the pause at 10:12. That's about 80 in-game seconds where YugiOh had ZERO APM. No one could win after that.
As unfair as it would have been for Avenge to regame, because he did have a clear advantage when the hardware malfunctioned, I think the greater injustice was done to YugiOh. As a fan of e-sports, I would have preferred to see a fair regame where Avenge lost than to see a YugiOh's chance a Code S spot lost because of technical difficulties.
On a side note: I think that in the future when a regame is necessary in a Bo3 or Bo1 match, the GOM referee should pick a new map so there is less meta-game over repeating a highly practiced build order. Ideally that would put both players on equal footing with neither having practiced on that map and the better player will emerge. |
